Le Cahier bleu

Sketch

First published in 1993 in (À SUIVRE), Le Cahier bleu marked a turning point in André Juillard’s career. Temporarily setting aside Les 7 Vies de l’Épervier (The 7 Lives of the Sparrowhawk), the historical epic that had established his reputation, the author revisits the theme of the love triangle, developing it into a complex and subtle narrative in which shifting perspectives weave a captivating story of remarkable psychological depth.
The album’s success also stems from the elegance of Juillard’s line work and color palette, as well as his mastery of framing and setting. These elements play a vital role in their own right, subtly dropping clues and inviting the reader to become the story’s fourth protagonist. Awarded Best Album at the Angoulême Festival in 1995, followed by the Grand Prix two years later, this work has since become an absolute must-read, and its heroine a timeless figure.
