A Master Technician in the Service of Classical Art

Born in 1981, Armel Gaulme is a graduate of Penninghen/Académie Julian (Paris), where he now teaches classical drawing and perspective. Introduced to drawing by Alan Lee, John Howe and the European illustrators of the 1900s, he devotes himself primarily to creating sketchbooks. Following his studies, he illustrated several series of children’s books for Le Baron Perché under the direction of Maylis de Kerangal, and later for other publishers (including Casterman and Bayard) before turning his hand to audiovisual creation. He has since crafted numerous pre-production drawings and matte paintings for the worlds of video games, animation and advertising. At the same time, he began teaching at several art schools and in his own studio. Driven by a desire to return to drawing on paper, he has published several sketchbooks, such as BESTiary in 2018 (Caurette), and has illustrated short stories such as H.P. Lovecraft’s The City Without a Name and Dagon, as well as Rudyard Kipling’s The Man Who Would Be King in the form of a watercolor sketchbook.

Like many, I grew up with Beatrix Potter’s talking bestiary, Puss in Boots and Fantastic Master Fox. Ever since, I have never ceased to marvel at the illustrators who took pleasure in capturing the traits of their fellow humans and transposing them onto animal features chosen for the occasion. I remember realistic, plausible creatures, endowed with real faces and authentic expressions. These were characters I would have loved to meet, a far cry from the stylized, angular and grimacing caricatures one sometimes encounters in contemporary "character design"…
