The Enfant Terrible of Comics

Ashley Wood (born in 1971) began his career as a comic artist in 1992 in England, where he drew Judge Dredd for 2000 AD Publishing, among other titles. He quickly made a name for himself in the American market, working for the genre’s major publishers—Marvel (Doom 2099, Ghost Rider), DC Comics (The Invisibles), Wildstorm, and later Image Comics (Spawn, Hellspawn). At IDW Publishing, he developed his own creations, including the Fanta series (2001) and, most notably, his cult graphic novel Popbot (2003), which he wrote and illustrated entirely within the span of just one year: 160 pages of a wild universe blending robots, science fiction, and satire.

In 2004, his collaboration with Japanese producer and director Hideo Kojima gave rise to one of the world’s very first digital comics, Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel, developed for Sony’s PlayStation Portable—a collaboration that continued across several installments of the video game franchise. That same year, Wood and his wife, TP Louise, founded 7174 PTY LTD, a globally operating Australian production company, before creating ThreeA (3A) in 2008, a company specializing in the design and manufacture of figurines and merchandise inspired by his universe. A multiple award winner—including the Spectrum Award, the Communication Arts Award, and a nomination for the Eisner Award—he was honored in 2013 with his first European exhibition at the Daniel Maghen Gallery in Paris, featuring pieces from World War Robot, World War Zombies, and Adventure Kartel.

Dave McKean and Ken Williams greatly influenced me with their use of blur and shadows, but I was only seeing the surface—[...] something was missing. So I retrained myself for two years and turned to artists like Alex Toth, Sergio Toppi, Liberatore, and Serpieri, who had much more concrete, solid lines. They were completely confident in their use of very defined colors and blacks. I wanted to learn to draw with clear lines myself—a confident style devoid of artifice.”
