The Art of Documentary Narrative

Gaétan Nocq is an illustrator, painter, sketchbook artist, and graphic novelist. A certified teacher of visual arts, he teaches technical drawing at the Ecole Olivier-de-Serres. At the same time, he created travel and reportage sketchbooks and became a member of the Carnettistes tribulants (The Wandering Travel-Log Artists) before turning to comic art. In 2016, he published Soleil brûlant en Algérie (Burning Sun in Algeria, 2016) and Capitaine Tikhomiroff (2017) with La Boîte à Bulles. Starting in 2019, he published Le Rapport W, infiltré à Auschwitz (Report W. Infiltrated into Auschwitz) with Daniel Maghen, a finalist for the 2020 Grand Prix de la Critique; Les Grands Cerfs in 2023, adapted from the novel by Claudie Hunzinger; and Octopolis in 2024.

The illustrations created by Gaétan Nocq are superb—like reportage sketches that have come to life, gouache sketches that perfectly capture the light of the ocean depths and the graceful movements of aquatic creatures.
