Jean-Louis Mourier grew up surrounded by the paintings of his father, an official painter for the French Navy, who gave him his first drawing lessons. Inspired by the classics of Franco-Belgian comics as well as American comics by Bernie Wrightson and Richard Corben, he enrolled at ENSAAMA in 1979 before entering the printing and advertising fields.
In 1987, he collaborated with Claire Bretécher on an album dedicated to Rodin for the museum bearing his name. His meeting with writer Christophe Arleston in Marseille proved decisive: together, they created Les Feux d’Askell (The Fires of Askell, 1993–1995), Mourier’s first album in direct color, before launching Trolls de Troy (1997), the flagship series of the Troy universe published by Soleil. Trolls dans la Brume (Trolls in the Mist), the sixth volume of the series, earned him the Prix Saint-Michel for Best Artwork in 2003. Four years later, he received the Grand Prix de l'affiche at the Quai des Bulles festival in Saint-Malo as well as the Prix Albert-Uderzo for Best Artwork.
The Trolls de Troy series, for which he handled the artwork and coloring until 2023, has established itself as one of the most popular and inventive fantasy sagas in Franco-Belgian comics.
Blending fiction, adventure, and humor, this wacky universe has been expanded by several spin-offs, including Trolls of Troy. More feral and down-to-earth than the original series, this work owes much to the fabulous talent of animal illustrator Jean-Louis Mourier, whose earthy, robust style is reminiscent of Albert Uderzo’s. A benchmark for this magical, fantastical, and fascinating world.
