The Artist behind the Lone Heroes
Yves Swolfs was born on 25 April 1955 in Brussels. He enrolled at the Université libre de Bruxelles in 1976 and studied journalism, which enabled him to master the art of storytelling. He continued his studies at the Institut Saint-Luc, at the Comic Art Department headed by Claude Renard, and published his first story in the second anthology by students of the Atelier R, Le 9ème Rêve. During these three years, he developed and perfected his personal style, drawing inspiration from Jijé, Jean Giraud, Hermann and Greg. After graduating, he produced advertising illustrations, created short comic strips and supported himself through a variety of jobs. Éditions des Archers approached him again with an offer to publish Durango, the story of a lone cowboy in the tradition of spaghetti Westerns, which was released in 1980. The series subsequently continued with Dargaud, Alpen Publishers and Soleil. He wrote and illustrated the first two volumes of the Dampierre series before focusing solely on writing the scripts for these two series, as well as Black Hills 1890, Vlad and James Healer. This allowed him to devote himself to two new sagas: Le Prince de la Nuit (published by Glénat), followed by Légendes (published by Soleil since 2003). 2015 was a busy year, with the release of the seventh volume of Le Prince de la Nuit and the seventeenth of Durango. Since 2018, he has been working on the Lonesome series (published by Le Lombard), the story of a solitary gunslinger with mysterious powers. The fourth volume of the series was published in 2024.
