Clément Oubrerie’s artwork possesses formidable narrative power. With his spontaneous and lively linework, he manages, with great lightness, to accurately convey the range of emotions that have made his books so successful. His bold color palettes support and accentuate his narrative: warm and sunny in Aya, they grow darker and more contrasting in Dali avant Gala. His distinctive graphic style has enabled him to create a rich body of work that has left its mark on the worlds of comic art, animation, and children’s literature alike.
To preserve your works on paper, we recommend that you never expose them to direct light, as UV rays can damage the mediums used. Paintings made with pastel or charcoal require special care to avoid rubbing. Works containing watercolor are particularly sensitive to light, unlike gouache and acrylic.
We advise you to display them away from windows, and to use frames made from pH-neutral conservation materials and “Museum” glass with anti-UV and anti-reflective treatment. If you prefer to keep your works unframed, we recommend storing them flat, in drawing cartons, with sheets of pH-neutral permanent paper in between. Keep them away from light and humidity.
In 1992, Clément Oubrerie put his studies at ESAG Penninghen on hold to move to the United States, where he published his first illustration works. Upon his return to Paris in 1994, he pursued a prolific career as a children’s book illustrator, creating nearly fifty titles, before making a sensational debut in comic art in 2005 with Aya de Yopougon(Aya of Yop City), co-written with Marguerite Abouet, which won an award at Angoulême and was nominated for an Eisner Award. His relaxed drawing style and sense of color were then showcased in a variety of projects—Zazie dans le Métro, Pablo, Voltaire in Love, and Les Royaumes du Nord (The Kingdoms of the North) - and numerous collaborations. As a co-founder of the studio Autochenille Productions, he co-directed, among other projects, the animated adaptation of Aya de Yopougon. He passed away in 2026 at the age of fifty-nine, leaving behind a poetic and colorful body of work that left its mark on Franco-Belgian comics. Complete biography.
