From September 19 to October 7, 2023, the Daniel Maghen Gallery is proud to dedicate an exhibition to David Sala, featuring more than 130 artworks from his latest books and albums. The exhibition offers an immersion into the graphic universe of this remarkable comic artist and superb children's books illustrator.
A magician with colours
Inspired by the Nabi and Symbolist painters, such as Félix Vallotton and Gustav Klimt, David Sala escapes the constraints of realism through a deliberately stylized approach.
The exhibition opens with his latest comic strips in direct color. After Le Joueur d'Échecs (The Chess Player, published by Casterman, 2017), an adaptation of Stefan Zweig's literary masterpiece, David Sala continues his graphic exploration with Le Poids des héros (The Weight of Heroes, published by Casterman, 2022). He has created a remarkable artwork, deploying a palette of vibrant colors in a formidable variety of techniques, from gouache to pastel, watercolor, and pencil. On one of the pages, we even find the mythical figure of Banshee painted in oil and enhanced with gold leaf. The most beautiful sequences from the album will be reproduced in large paintings created especially for the event.
The exhibition also highlights the graphic power of his youth-oriented worlds, through a selection of oil and pastel paintings from his latest books Le Géant Chagrin, La Ballade d'Ilyas, La Belle et la Bête, Le Bonheur prisonnier, Le Coffre enchanté and Féroce. With their magical colors, finely detailed settings, and interplay of textures and patterns, his dreamlike artworks captivate the eye and draw us into his imaginary worlds.
