Past

From December 13, 2022, to January 7, 2023, the Daniel Maghen Gallery is proud to dedicate an exhibition to two talented artists: Patrice Pellerin, author of L'Épervier (published by Dupuis & Quadrants), and Thierry Robin, author of Pierre Rouge, Plume Noire (published by Dargaud).

Two Historical Worlds

Following the resounding success of the Patrice Pellerin special sale in June 2022, the Daniel Maghen Gallery is dedicating a retrospective to one of the greatest authors of historical and maritime comics. It brings together around a hundred artworks—original black-and-white pages and color artworks—from all the albums of L'Épervier, his iconic series as a complete author and colorist, as well as his two Barbe-Rouge albums, including a cover. For thirty years, he has given free rein to his two great passions: history and maritime drawing. Each L'Épervier album is the result of exceptional documentary research, which gives his pages and stories a striking realism. Over the years, Patrice Pellerin has acquired such knowledge that he considers himself a specialist in the year 1742 in France. He is also one of the greatest illustrators of ships from this period: he takes immense pleasure in perfecting every detail!

Thierry Robin is also featured in this exhibition through the original pages from his album Pierre Rouge, Plume Noire (published by Dargaud, 2022). He is notably the author of Rouge de Chine and Koblenz, and the comic artist of La Mort de Staline and Mort au Tsar, with Nury as scriptwriter. For this story, he draws inspiration from a local legend and plunges us into the province of Guizhou in China, where the mighty fortress of Hai Long Tun stands, soon to be attacked by the Emperor's immense army. This epic tale showcases the artist's talent in both drawing and scriptwriting. This album is brilliantly structured around a dialogue between two witnesses to the confrontation: a crow and a mountain. Thierry Robin thus offers a reflection on the absurdity of war and class relations through spectacular staging and captivating graphics, with a multitude of breathtaking double-page spreads. His black-and-white pages will be on display, along with a series of illustrations inspired by the world of the album and created especially for the occasion.
