Created by Jacques Ferrandez in 1987, Carnets d’Orient chronicles more than a century of Algerian history, from the early years of French colonization to the eve of the War of Independence. Blending fictional destinies with historical events, the saga is built upon extensive documentary research and its creator’s determination to avoid a partisan perspective by exploring the viewpoints of all sides involved. Jacques Ferrandez’s luminous watercolor artwork, inspired by Orientalist painting, softens the harshness of history, bringing warmth and color to the narrative. Acclaimed for its historical rigor, objectivity and profound understanding of its subject, Carnets d’Orient received the Special Jury Prize at the Historia Awards in 2012. Additional volumes have since expanded the series, continuing its chronological timeline.
