On an Earth plunged into an eternal winter, only a small portion of humanity survives thanks to a perpetual motion-train. Forced to adapt to their new environment, the passengers organize themselves, but a caste system soon emerges, reflecting the social inequalities already present on Earth. A socially conscious work, the series questions its readers on dynamics of domination, class struggle, authoritarianism, technocratic excesses, and humanity's capacity to reproduce the same wrongs. Rochette's minimalist black-and-white artwork brings scale to the narrative, reinforcing the apocalyptic feel and the claustrophobic sensation of a locked-room setting. Published between 1982 and 1983 in (A Suivre) and later reissued by Casterman, the series has since acquired a reputation far beyond the borders of comic art, having been adapted twice –for the cinema by Bong Joon-ho and for Netflix.
