Lucky Luke
Imagined by Morris in Arizona 1880 and published in 1946 in the pages of L'Almanach Spirou, Lucky Luke quickly became an iconic figure in comic art, with Morris drawing his adventures for nearly 55 years. Inspired by his time in the United States, Morris published the first volume of a long-running series in 1949, La Mine d'or de Dick Digger (Dick Digger's Gold Mine), marking the birth of the first Belgian Western comic series. The solitary cowboy with his legendary cool demeanor never stopped, chasing bandits and outlaws, with the unstoppable Dalton brothers at the very top of the list. From 1955 onward, René Goscinny joined Morris as a writer, beginning a collaboration lasting more than twenty years that brought a sharp satirical edge to the series. Under his pen, each album became a perfect excuse to cleverly revisit a chapter of American history—the Gold Rush, the construction of the railroad, the conquest of the West—while multiplying references to John Ford’s cinema and Hollywood stars. Since then, Lucky Luke has continued to ride across the American plains under the pencils of other artists (Achdé, Bonhomme, Brüno…) and occasionally even ventures onto the big screen!
