From Cartoons to Comic Art: The Art of Never Repeating Yourself

Tiburce Oger has been passionate about drawing since childhood. Even then, he was already a fervent admirer of Walt Disney, Giraud, Hermann, Pellos, and the Pieds Nickelés. He graduated from the National Comic Strip and Image Centre (CNDBI) in Angoulême, before working for three years in animation, where he contributed to series such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Lucky Luke, and Denver, the Last Dinosaur. In 1991, succeeding Patrick Prugne, he won the Alph-Art Avenir award, and the following year published his first graphic novel, Gorn (published by Vents d’Ouest), a series he would continue over eleven volumes. Having gained recognition with Gorn, Tiburce continued his career: alternating between roles as artist and scriptwriter, he created numerous series, ranging from the Western La Piste des ombres (The Shadow Trail) to the children’s story of the giant Orull, including the mysterious Auberge du bout du monde (The Inn at the Edge of the World), illustrated by his friend Patrick Prugne, and more recently, his adaptation of La Forêt (The Forest), a fantasy tale written by actor Vincent Perez. Tiburce never ceases to amaze with the diversity and originality of his work; in 2008, he wrote two new albums: Ewen, with Andreï Arinouchkine, and Deux Vies (Two Lives) with Didier Eberoni, published by Daniel Maghen. In 2011, his love of fantasy led him to adapt Anne Robillard’s Les Chevaliers d’Émeraude (The Emerald Knights) saga into a comic book series, with the first volume achieving a record print run for the author. Returning to his passion for Westerns, in 2015 he published Buffalo Runner with Rue de Sèvres, as well as Black Sands – Unité 731 and Ma guerre (My War), co-written with Guy-Pierre Gautier.
