From heroic fantasy to space opera, Alex Alice is a leading figure in contemporary comic art
Born in 1974, Alex Alice is one of the most talented comic artists and scriptwriters of his generation. He achieved immediate success at the turn of the 2000s with a series that has become legendary, Le Troisième Testament (The Third Testament). His ambitious project Siegfried, inspired by Wagner’s opera, earned him the Spectrum Gold Award, a global benchmark in fantasy illustration. After selling over a million albums, translated into some twenty languages, Alex Alice did not hesitate to reinvent his style with his new series for all ages, Le Château des étoiles (Castle in the Stars), which was an instant success. Entirely rendered in spot colors, his pages evoke both the illustrations of Jules Verne and the enchanted memories of youthful travels through the castles of Bavaria… The saga now comprises seven albums and a parallel series, Les Chimères de Vénus (Venus Chimeras), by Alain Ayroles and Etienne Jung. In 2026, Alex Alice publlished, still with the publisher Rue de Sèvres, Le Cygne noir, in the same univers. The serie is also the subject of an art book titled L’Univers en 1875 (published by Rue de Sèvres) and a sketchbook, Prototypes (published by Caurette).
I wanted to recapture the sense of wonder found in the great 19th-century scientific adventure novels.
